What makes a home your home?
Today I was texting my sister Abi and she asked, “What makes a house feel like yours?” Then she added, “I always feel settled once I hang up pictures.” I realized that she was totally right. Once all the corners are scrubbed and the boxes put away, a new house doesn’t quite feel like home until you hang your pictures. The funny thing is, that’s about the last thing I do! So this time around, I’m resolved to start putting up my favorites pictures and pieces of art, even if I’m not done finding a place for everything or even before I know exactly how I’d like to decorate. I have a feeling this will do wonders to make our family feel like we’re living in our own home.
Also, Abi added that sometimes she just hangs her favorite photos and some pretty postcards on the inside of her kitchen cabinets. She said it makes her happy whenever she sees them.
Anyway, all of this got me to wondering. Is the picture thing universal? Is that what makes you feel at home? Or is it something else? Entertaining for the first time? Painting? The passing of time? What are your thoughts?
