Living with Same-Sex Attraction

I recently became aware of a ministry called Living Out, a non-profit led by three Christian leaders who experience same-sex attraction. The ministry has a three-fold mission ::

  • To help Christian brothers and sisters who experience same-sex attraction stay faithful to Biblical teaching on sexual ethics and flourish at the same time.
  • To help the Christian Church understand how they can better help those who experience same-sex attraction to flourish.
  • To help the wider world hear and understand that there is more than just one viable script for those who are same-sex attracted.

One of the most interesting components of their website is a collection of stories from Christians who are same-sex attracted. At first, I started listening to their stories so that I could understand them better and hopefully be more empathetic to their feelings and situation. But the end result was that I was profoundly encouraged and challenged by the devotion and simplicity of their faith. Hearing of their love for Jesus made me remember all the things that make me love Jesus. Hearing of their sacrifices reminded me of the things that I must daily sacrifice in order to follow Jesus.

It just became obvious really quickly that the Church would benefit from the stories, input and example of these Christians who are same-sex attracted. We must be open to them—both to help and to be helped by them—and diligently safeguard the Church’s mission to be a family to all those who have faith in Jesus.

Here’s a link to all the stories, but I’m including a few here as well ::

If you’re interesting in dialoging more about this issue or want to tell your own story, I’d love to talk. My email is aannagreer(at)gmail(dot)com.
