God Made Your Sexuality
Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
These days, we tend to create many different categories for sexuality: sex, gender, romance, marriage, reproduction, etc. But when God first created humanity, he meant for all of these things to be experienced together, and the ability to experience these things is your sexuality.
Our sexuality was designed in a special way, with all kinds of amazing and mind-blowing and practical things that come from it, and it has a very specific purpose:
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
In Ephesians, Paul quotes from Genesis 2:24 and states that the creation of sexuality between a man and a woman is a profound revelation of the relationship between Christ and the church.
We were given sexuality in order to reflect the qualities found in Jesus’ relationship with his bride—covenant faithfulness, pleasure, unity and procreation. If you’re not at a place where you can embrace these things with your sexuality, then you’re not ready to engage in a sexual relationship. Once you are, then you can joyfully begin that sexual relationship, knowing that you’ll be reflecting Jesus and his church.
