Extra Virgin :: Technology and Sex
In the next several weeks, I’d like to spend some time talking about the way technology influences our sexuality. While we all definitely have some strong opinions about the topic, I’d like this to be more of a discussion. This is such a new and evolving issue and I’m interested to hear your thoughts on it and how technology may have affected you or those around you. In each post, I’ll pose a question and then wait to hear from you in the comments.
Last week, The New York Times published an article that reported one study in which “one in three people admitted they’d rather give up sex than their smartphones.”
Whether this news comes as a surprise to you or not, it definitely establishes a huge turning point in our society. When, in the history of humanity, has there been something more consuming or universal than sexual desire? But we now find ourselves possessing something even more tantalizing and addicting than sex. What I find so ironic is that while there has been a huge (and warranted) fear that technology is fostering sexual lust and addiction, it may actually also be the death of a real and healthy sex life. So here’s my question ::
In your opinion, how might a phone addiction negatively affect a healthy sex drive in a married couple?
