Do you ever write letters?
Last week I watched an episode of the show Elemental in which Sherlock writes a letter to Moriarty. There was something about the scene that just struck me. It seemed so calming to sit and write on paper, but much more than that, I loved how they were trying to communicate to each other in a very thoughtful and committed way. It reminded me that when you write letters, as often as you may tell news, you’re also communicating in ideas. You may write about a topic that feels too complex or important or vulnerable to talk about face-to-face. When you’re writing things out, however, your brain engages in a way it can’t at the speed of normal conversation.
I’m old enough to have had lots of letter writing experience under my belt before the internet came along, but it’s been over a decade since I was in the habit of writing letters to someone. But as luck would have it, Logan left on a trip just days after I started thinking about letter writing. I resolved to write him an email every night, to let him know how I was, but also to see if we might be able to engage our relationship in a new way.
It got me wondering…do you ever write letters (or just-for-fun emails)? If so, to whom do you write? What do you write about? If you could pick any person as a pen-pal, who would it be? :)
