AG Book Club :: April
This month’s book selection is Real Sex: The Naked Truth About Chastity by Lauren F. Winner. Chastity is the age-old virtue of “sex only within marriage—which means, in turn, abstinence if you’re not married, and fidelity if you are”. Instead of focusing on virginity, Winner turns our attention on chastity, and the responsibility that every Christian bears to do sex in a way that’s best for the Body of Christ. This book is one of the best, and certainly the most eloquent, discussions on the topic of premarital sex from a Christian point of view, doggedly challenging both our culture and the Christian norm, while offering some surprisingly practical and doable tips for pursuing chastity.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who ::
a) is single
b) is married
c) has friends who are single
d) has friends who are married
e) would like to speak in a semi-intelligent way about premarital sex from God’s point of view
This topic is difficult, both because of it’s private nature, and also because of the explosive opinions surrounding it. If we’re ever confronted on our beliefs about sex or abstinence, most of us get at least a little tongue-tied. This book was incredibly helpful to me in informing me on both biblical and cultural attitudes towards sex and also in clarifying my own thoughts on the matter. Lauren Winner is brilliant, funny and transparent, and writes in a way both intelligent and interesting.
(With that said, I totally understand if you’re not comfortable discussing the topic of sex in public, whether it’s on the Facebook page or in my living room at book club. You can bow out of this month’s discussion, no questions asked. And please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I’d be happy to talk with you.)
Love you all and can’t wait to hear your thoughts. I’m sure this month’s book club is going to have a spirited discussion! :)
