A peek into our living room
There’s nothing like some overnight guests to really motivate you to finish those decorating projects you’ve been putting off. Since I knew my parents were going to be visiting this past weekend, I decided to give my living room a little TLC. Really, all I did was hang a few pictures and finish a DIY project I had started, but I love the result, especially when my mom arrived with a POANG chair from Ikea to complete the room.
These two pictures are so sentimental to me. The top piece is a Mike Miller silhouette that Maria gave me as a birthday present a few years back. The painting is by Biaka Zaidarhzauva, an artist and friend of ours from here in Joplin. Also, I finally got around to sewing that ticking stripe pillow! It’s as comfy and cozy as I imagined it would be.
I’ve spent a long time trying to think of the perfect ottoman/coffee table for this area. It needed to be sturdy enough to put down a drink, rugged enough for us to prop up our feet, but it also had to be something that wobbly Valentine could be around without cracking her head open. Then, one day, I found a mountain of these canvas covered cubes at Wal-Mart for ten bucks a pop. I loaded up as many as my cart would allow, found some fabric from Hobby Lobby, and made these custom ottomans.
Logan was cracking me up because he was so sweetly worried about my fabric choice. He thought that the Native American motif might not be as cool as I thought it was. He asked, “Is this going to be like when we wear Crocs and we think they’re awesome, but college students snicker at us once we leave the room?” :) I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have a great concept of what’s “cool” anymore, but I can’t get enough of this print. Partly because I just read Mrs. Mike and want to paint everything Canadian Mounty red and accessorize with bear skins and feathers, partly because I love the jewel tones, partly because I like the casual/Lodge-y vibe it lends to the room. So…cool? I don’t know. Love? Yes!
This is by far my favorite addition to the room. Chelsea Hale, an extremely talented artist, just finished this beautiful ink drawing of a fox for us. I had seen some of Chelsea’s “geometric animal” drawings on Instagram and asked if she would be willing to create a piece for our family. Foxes are Logan’s favorite animal (besides, of course, dogs) and so it was an easy choice. I’m beyond happy with the result. It’s gorgeous. (Pardon the weird sized matte on the frame—having a little trouble finding the right size just yet.)
Hope you can come over and snuggle into our couches for a chat some day soon!
